870 EVO

Reviewer verdict

Across 15 YouTube reviews, the Samsung 870 EVO earns a Summa score of 3.8/5, ranking #52 among SSDs. Reviewers most often praise its performance, durability, software, while the most common criticisms concern performance, durability.

As a top-tier SATA SSD, the Samsung 870 EVO delivers refined, reliable performance that approaches the theoretical maximum of the interface, resulting in faster boot times and snappier application launches. Its rock-solid reliability is backed by quality in-house components like Samsung's V-NAND and controller, a high endurance rating, and a generous 5-year warranty. Users consistently praise the included Samsung Magician software, an intuitive and powerful suite for drive monitoring, data migration, and performance optimization. The universal 2.5-inch form factor ensures broad compatibility, making it an easy and popular choice for upgrading older laptops and desktops or for adding dependable secondary storage to any system.

The drive's primary drawback is its SATA III interface, which acts as a performance ceiling, making it significantly slower than any modern NVMe SSD and offering only minimal speed gains over its predecessors. More troubling are the widespread reports of certain batches, particularly early production units, suffering from premature catastrophic failures and developing bad sectors, which has eroded user trust in its long-term reliability. Additionally, its sustained write performance can drop significantly once the SLC cache is exhausted, a limitation most noticeable on lower-capacity models. For some, its price is also slightly higher than competing SATA drives.
